Minister Mr. S.M. Krishna will arrive in Katmandu on Friday on a three-day official visit to Nepal, aimed strengthening and deepening bilateral relations between the two countries. Besides holding discussions with his Nepali counterpart Sujata Koirala, Mr. Krishna will meet Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal Friday afternoon and call on the President Dr.Ram Baran Yadav on Saturday. He is scheduled to meet the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Subhash Nemwang, Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala and other senior Nepalese leaders.

Official sources described the visit as a part of ongoing high level bilateral interaction between the two neighboring countries. This will be Mr. Krishna’s first visit to Nepal after becoming India’s external affairs minister in May last year. During the visit, the two countries are likely to ink five MoUs in areas including the establishment of a Nepal Police Academy, the upgradation of Nepal Stock Exchange, construction of fast track roads in Terai areas, rural electrification and establishment of a Scientific and Technical Research Centre in Nepal.

The grade of Nepal’s peace process besides ways to enhance bilateral relations will also figure during discussions between Mr. Krishna and Nepalese leaders. The visit assumes significance as Nepal is struggling to achieve political stability and move ahead with the peace process and drafting of a new constitution.
