A U.S. drone missile attack that may have been intended at Pakistan’s most-wanted militant group Taliban and Al-Qaeda., killed 16 people in the country’s troubled tribal areas.
The early morning airstrike Thursday targeted a suspected militant area and nearby school in Shaktoi village along the border of North and South Waziristan, both regions regarded as strongholds for the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mahsud was the aim of the attack and may have been among the dead. However, Pakistani Taliban spokesman Azam Tariq rejected reports of Mahsud’s death as “totally baseless; we are safe.”
Pakistan’s, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has said international forces led by America cannot succeed in Afghanistan without Islamabad’s assistance.
He added, ”America can’t fight in Afghanistan without Pakistan. We know our strategic importance. No war can be won in Afghanistan without us.”
