Sonia Gandhi ticks off MPs for playing truant

soniaSonia Gandhi on Thursday ticked off party MPs for playing truant from Parliament and creating serious embarrassment for the government.

Making no bones about her exasperation with chronic absenteeism, she raised the subject towards the end of her address at a meeting of party MPs. In almost all my addresses to you I have felt compelled to refer to another issue, that of attendance, she said without hiding her unhappiness.

Her strong words were a clear indication of the party leadership’s low tolerance level for the pitiable spectacle of thin attendance. Regular attendance is part of our basic duty and responsibility, she said.

In an implicit reference to new MPs, she pointed out that being in the House and listening to debates was part of the “education” of young members. Warning them of disciplinary action, she said, “The time has come to take poor attendance on the part of members seriously.” The government had faced serious embarrassment during the winter session when question hour once collapsed because of the poor attendance of members.
